YMS pupils have been doubly privileged this week. Not only have we had Paul Ellison here, double bass professor from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, Texas, but also Atar Arad, viola professor from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Both gave up their time on their UK visits to teach our students. In addition, Professor Arad gave a lecture recital of his twelve Caprices, each named after the first name of a composer and inspired by a particular piece of music written for the viola. In his speech of thanks YMS Director of Music (and GSMD composition professor) Malcolm Singer suggested some other composers who could form the inspiration for another set of Caprices, Max (Bruch), Max (Reger) ... Professor Arad in a flash responded that one might be named Malcolm ... Many thanks to both professors for making time for YMS. It was much appreciated.
