Summer Festival!

Our Summer Festival is now in full swing after a momentous start to the week-long celebration! On Saturday we had our ever-popular annual Orchestral Picnic, followed by a Sunday afternoon full of musical magic at our Family Day Concert: The Carnival of the Animals!

Monday nights Chamber Music Showcase featured Stravinsky’s dramatic Rite of Spring, with our Director of Music Pianist Ashley Wass and some of our pupils arranged for two pianos, bass drum and tam-tam. Plus, Johannes Brahms Piano Quartet No 3 in C minor Op 60, but with an exciting twist arranged by four of our pupils!

Still to come this week we have:

Tuesday 4 July – ‘And All the People Rejoice’

Star of stage and screen Henry Goodman is the host for a highly entertaining and witty look into the richly historied relationship between music and the monarchy. Written by BBC Radio 3 presenter Ian Skelly.

Wednesday 5 July – Leavers’ Showcase I
Thursday 6 July – Leavers’ Showcase II

A chance to say ‘I heard them here first’ as the graduating pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School give celebratory final recitals of some classical showstoppers from Mozart and Brahms before they head off to forge their professional careers on the world’s most famous stages.

Friday 7 July – Finale - Ode to Joy!

This joyous musical spectacle will feature celebrated musicians, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and classical pianist Wu Qian, and the pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School’s Junior Orchestra performing Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Piano, Violin and Strings, an enchanting work written when the composer was just 14 years old. After the interval, the Festival will come to a close with a spine-tingling showstopper: Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9 in an arrangement for two pianos and choir.

Director of Music and pianist Ashley Wass will take one of the piano parts alongside four pupils who will each play a movement with the massed voices of the School’s choir and singers from Music in Secondary School’s Trust performing the magnificent final movement.
