We are deeply saddened to share the news of the death of Sir Alan Traill. A passionate advocate of education and music, Sir Alan was a governor of the School for 11 years, and was Chair from 2004-11.

Sir Alan’s contributions to the improvement of the School were innumerable. Of particular note was his establishment of the Education Committee - an important step in advancing the academic achievement of our pupils. Additionally, his dauntless efforts to facilitate the construction of The Menuhin Hall were critical to improving the musical opportunities for our children, and enabled us to provide our entire community with a place to come together and celebrate that which is most important to us – our music.

Sir Alan was Lord Mayor of London from 1984-5, an Almoner at Christ’s Hospital School, Governor of Treloar’s School and Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He is survived by his wife, Lady Traill (herself a dedicated supporter of YMS and The Menuhin Hall), his son and his two grandchildren.
