In memory of Michael Cowan

We are deeply saddened by the death of our major donor, Michael Cowan. Michael supported the School for over 20 years through significant contributions towards our pupil bursaries, music studios, and two major match funding initiatives.

Michael's primary interest was to provide opportunities to talented young people without the means to pursue a musical education which is central to The Yehudi Menuhin School ethos. His support has made a vital difference to the lives of so many musicians at our School.

Michael also supported Grange Park Opera, who named him as their Honorary President last Summer in view of his mentoring and advice, as well as his considerable generosity. He was a Benefactor Fellow and Chair of the Development Board at Churchill College, Cambridge, where he was an undergraduate engineering student from 1970-73. He became the College’s first Winston Churchill Fellow in 2020, in recognition of the significant financial support and fund management advice he had given the College in the preceding 20 years.

He will be greatly missed by The Yehudi Menuhin School community and will be remembered for his incredible generosity and kindness. Our thoughts are with his wife, Hilary, who is also a much-valued supporter of the School, and his family at this time.
