Hyung-ki Joo
Pianist and ComposerThe musical life I lead is a rich and diverse one. I am a composer and a pianist and am fortunate to have opportunities as a pianist and composer. I am passionate about chamber music, and for seven years I had a piano trio with two other YMS Alumni.
I also create shows that infuse classical music with other art forms such as humour, and theatre. I have worked in film, usually with some musical connection, acting or directing, editing or producing. Creativity is an essential aspect of life for me, and I have written a book about creativity along with my duo partner, Aleksey Igudesman, whom I met at the Menuhin School.
I also love to conduct, and I especially enjoy working with youthful and student orchestras. I am heavily concerned about musical education and I teach whenever I can, and I also love to give special workshops, (“Beyond the Practice Room”), dealing with aspects that are very rarely approached in traditional music education to equip the musician for what life will throw at them.
I was at the Menuhin School for seven years, and so much of my time there has had a direct impact on my present life. Many of the closest people in my life, both professionally and personally, have been students at the Menuhin School and so I’m honoured to have the chance to mentor someone from our Alma Mater.
