We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Hilary Cowan, one of the Yehudi Menuhin School’s most cherished supporters and a devoted Governor. Hilary’s connection with YMS spanned generations, continuing the legacy of her mother, Margaret Slade, whose admiration for Yehudi Menuhin and unwavering support for the School began in the 1960s. Hilary inherited that same generosity of spirit and, together with her husband Michael, became a cornerstone of the School community.

The Cowans opened their home countless times for concerts and dinners, inspiring others to share in their passion for nurturing young musicians. Their philanthropy extended far beyond hospitality: they supported bursaries, capital projects and practice rooms, and their kindness is permanently honoured in the naming of Cowan House, the girls’ boarding house. Pupils continue to appreciate their impact – one recently remarked how much the house has improved “thanks to the Cowans.”

Hilary humbly recognised the difference her support made to pupils’ futures, proudly saying, “I had a hand in that.”  A tireless champion of the arts and of YMS, she served on the board of Governors with wisdom and warmth.

Our thoughts are with Hilary and Michael’s three children, as we remember with gratitude a family whose kindness and vision have shaped the School we cherish today.
