Join the Friends

Lord Menuhin founded the Friends of The Yehudi Menuhin School in 1971 together with a few local supporters of the School. Since then the Friends have grown to over 750 supporters from all over the globe, offering financial assistance to the School and a warm, supportive presence at concerts.

Many of our Friends enjoy following the journey of our pupils as they progress through the School and into the wider world as professional musicians.Friends’ membership dues go towards bursaries, the Student Hardship Fund and other areas that significantly enhance the life of the pupils at the School.

How your membership supports our pupils

Student Bursaries

We are very grateful that the Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme provides many of our pupils with the financial support they need to study at the School. Unfortunately, not all pupils qualify and we do not have sufficient places to meet the high demand, resulting in a number of pupils struggling to find sufficient funds to attend the school. Help from the Friends is critical in supporting our pupils and helping us to fulfil Yehudi Menuhin’s vision that any talented young person should have the chance to attend the school, irrespective of their economic background.

Student Hardship Fund
The Student Hardship Fund provides pupils with occasional help, unrelated to bursary funding, which enables them to take advantage of opportunities outside of the School term, such as music courses, masterclasses and competitions, both throughout the UK and across the world. With 90% of pupils currently receiving financial assistance with School fees, the demand for support is correspondingly high. The School aims to raise £25,000 every year for this Fund in order to meet the demand and ensure that those students from lower-income families can enjoy the same opportunities as their wealthier peers.

Student Life

The Friends also raise money for projects, both large and small, which directly benefit the life of our students. These may enhance their musical life(previous gifts include the Steinway grand piano and chamber organ in TheMenuhin Hall), their academic studies, or their day-to-day experience around the School – from swings to minibuses to audio-visual equipment. The Friends have recently raised sufficient funds to contribute to the replacement of three practice pianos in the boarding houses.

Piano Fund

The Friends have chosen to support our students in 19/20 through kick starting a new rolling programme of piano replacement. The School currently aims to replace at least three practice pianos per year, more if funds allow.
